Ryan Broad has taken on the important flugel horn role at Leyland Band as they look forward to their British Open Championship appearance in Birmingham on the weekend.

Ryan joined the band in 2011 from Lostock Hall Memorial Band and has worked his way up through the cornet ranks onto the solo cornet bench. Earlier this year he returned to where it all began by being appointed Lostock's new Musical Director.

New challenge

The University of Salford graduate told 4BR: "I'm extremely pleased to be taking on the flugel role and I'm looking forward to the new challenge especially at major events such as the British Open."

Great story

A band spokesperson added: "This is a great story of hard work and development, as Ryan initially joined us on 3rd cornet.

We've been delighted to witness his progress, and we felt that now was the right time to make the move for him to become a solo player with the band."

They added: "We would like to thank Joel Kirk for his service on flugel over the last year, which he has now relinquished in order to pursue his music studies in the United States."
