4BR has been informed that the long term musical partnership between Stephen Cooper and City of Coventry Band has come to an end.

It marks the conclusion of his third period as MD — one that initially started back in the 1980s. The latest tenure with the Midlanders resumed in 2004 and has included winning the Midlands Second Section Area title and coming runner-up in the First Section.

Difficult decision

The experienced conductor told 4R: "With such a long association with the band it's been a very difficult decision to make, but one that is right for both of us.

My work commitments have really increased so the time is right. I'm delighted that our family connection will continue as it's such a great band to be associated with, and I'm sure whoever makes over will do a wonderful job with a wonderful group of people."

100 not out

Stephen also revealed that he surprised himself to find out that he recently notched up 100 contest appearances in his career.

"I know there are many other conductors who have got more contest appearances to their name, but I feel quite proud of my century — and I want to add more to it at some time in the future.

There have been plenty of highlights but just thinking of all those pieces I've enjoyed working on over the years has been great."
