Nigel Weeks, the conductor of the 2014 and 2017 National Band of New Zealand and MD of the former National Champion Dalewool Auckland Brass, has been awarded the Queen's Service Medal for services to music.
The honour has been awarded since 1975 by the government of New Zealand in recognition and reward volunteer service to the community and also public service in elected or appointed public office.
Significant contribution
In the 25 years since emigrating to New Zealand, the Welshman has made a hugely significant impact on the brass band movement in the country, including winning the A Grade National title with Dalewool Auckland Brass on three occasions.
He also led the band to the Australian National title three times and gained the distinction of leading the National Band of New Zealand on two occasions — including to the World Music Championships in Kerkrade.

He has also led Gunnedah Shire Band to the Australian Entertainment Championship title and Nelson City Brass to the C Grade New Zealand National Championship. His work in the education field has also been widely acclaimed.
