This year's Tameside Whit Friday contests will honour one of its finest supporters.
Brian Hill loved the event and was always seen at the contests in Saddleworth and Oldham. In 1996, he became landlord of the Tame Valley Hotel in Dukinfield, with one of his first objectives being to bring the Whit Friday contests to Dukinfield — something that came to fruition in 1998. The event has been an integral part of the circuit ever since.
Worked tirelessly
Brian, his wife, Denise and his three daughters worked tirelessly to ensure the contest was a great success, and it quickly became a community highlight of the year. He later became secretary of the Friends of Whit Friday Brass Band Committee and each year found time to gain funding and sponsorship from local businesses, along with building a reputation for excellent organisation for the Tameside contests.
Upon retirement he took the role of Chairman of Friends of Whit Friday, but sadly, after a brave battle with cancer, Brian passed away last September.
