4BR has been informed of the death on 6th April of the respected conductor Lyn Morgan.
He started his banding career in Wales as a tenor horn player with the Ystalyfera Public Band, where he helped them to victory at the National Eisteddfod.
In 1962 he joined the RAF as a musician and a year later he won the Worshipful Company of Musicians Silver Medal for being the most outstanding student of the year.
He became a member of the RAF Central Band in 1965, remaining there until 1979, when he was appointed Senior Brass Instructor to the RAF School of Music.
Regional success
He was appointed Musical Director of the Luton Band in September 1976, leading them to considerable success, including the London & Southern Counties Regional Championship Section title in 1980, coming 20th at the National Final at the Royal Albert Hall.
Under his baton they also won events at Lansing Bagnall, Aylesbury and Milton Keynes, whilst he also enjoyed further success with the likes of Handcross Band (winning the L&SC Third Section title in 1985 and coming fourth at the Final), Welwyn Garden City, Staines and Clacton on Sea Cooperative.
A highly respected adjudicator, he judged at all levels, including the National Eisteddfod of Wales and Regional Championships.
He was appointed Musical Director of the Luton Band in September 1976, leading them to considerable success, including the London & Southern Counties Regional Championship Section title in 19804BR
Funeral arrangements
The funeral of Lyn Morgan will take place at 1.20pm on Tuesday 7th May, at Worthing Crematorium. Family flowers only please, with donations to SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen & Families Association).
