Weston contest still on pause

The popular Weston Super Mare contest will not be held in 2019 — but hopes remain that banding support will see it return.

There is still hope that the Weston Contest will return

The South West Brass Band Association has announced that its popular Own Choice contest will not return in 2019.

However, 4BR was informed that there remains hope that successful negotiations for its return in the recently renovated Winter Gardens on the sea front at Weston Super Mare can resurrect the contest.

Concern

Repairs and renovations on the building owned and managed by Weston College have been completed, including a 350 seat ballroom. However, there remain concerns over some aspects of the facilities to accommodate bands.

A spokesperson told 4BR: "An extensive review of options has been undertaken as we were always conscious of the appeal that Weston has as a resort destination for bands and their families.

We would ask all bands who have supported this event and any others who would like to support us to attend the SWBBA AGM on Sunday 24th March.

Band feedback is essential in planning the contest format and resource requirements."

Support

They added: "If enough bands step forward to express an interest in attending and making the event viable we will takes steps to plan and prepare."
