Elland to mark solo anniversary with revamp

The 30th Elland Silver Band Slow Melody contest will get a revamp as it continues to inspire brass and percussion players to enjoy themselves...

The 30th anniversary hopes to welcome plenty of players on all instruments this year

2019 marks the 30th anniversary of Elland Silver Band's annual Slow Melody contest.

Over the years the contest has become one of the most popular events of its kind, with many of the young participants going on to enjoy long and successful musical associations with bands up and down the country.

Sponsors

To mark the occasion Elland has given things a make-over, with the event attracting a new sponsor in Band Supplies Ltd and now taking place on Saturday 22nd June at the local Blackley Baptist Church, which has excellent facilities for both performers and listeners alike — from a separate warm-up area to a splendid refreshment area.

Band Secretary Kathleen Harrison told 4BR: "We will also be able to offer soloists the opportunity to perform with piano accompaniment and will be introducing new sections for tuned percussionist (xylophone, glockenspiel and vibraphone).

We want to make this a fully inclusive occasion, and with open adjudication we hope to be able to provide players of all ages and abilities the opportunity to demonstrate their lyrical slow melody talents and gain valuable feedback and tips.

We also encourage the duets and quartets to perform music in any style and the classes are grouped in age bands — including our first ever Novice Class for first timers."

Gala concert performances

Kathleen revealed that as well as plenty of trophies, the winners of each category will also receive a music voucher, sponsored by Band Supplies and an invitation to perform in the evening gala concert.

"We have made the changes to ensure we continue to attract players from far and wide to enjoy a great day,"Kathleen added. "We are really looking forward to entries from tuned percussion players. The next 30 years promise to be just as exciting."

The event will be rounded off with free evening gala concert featuring Elland Silver Band conducted by Daniel Brooks, along with performances from each of the winners in each category.
