The death has been announced of John Thomas, a much respected Life Member of the Lewis Merthyr Band in South Wales.

He passed away on Monday 10th December at The Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant. He leaves a wife Jean.

Great character

Band Manager Paul Williams told 4BR: "John started playing in the early 1950's with the Ynyshir Boys Band, going on to the seniors on BBb bass, the instrument he played until his retirement from playing. In 1968 he joined Lewis Merthyr and played at the National Finals of 1968 and 1969."

He added: "John always took an active part in the running of both the Ynyshir and Lewis Merthyr Bands. He was a great brass band character, as all who knew him would confirm.

He will be greatly missed by all members of the band and the brass band movement in Wales. I'm sure the condolences of everyone will go out to his wife Jean and the family."
