Revival gains pace for British Open Solo & Quartet Championships at Butlins

There has been an encouraging response from players hoping to become British Open Solo & Quartet Champions at Bultins in January — but organisers are hoping for more youngsters to take their first steps to fame.

Butlins
The Championships will take place at the Skyline Resort in Skegness

As reported on 4BR, the revived British Open Solo & Quartet Championships will take place at the Butlins Mineworkers Brass Band Festival in January 2019 (11th — 14th January), with the news that it has already attracted a great deal of interest.

Entries for the competitions at the Skyline Resort in Skegness have been received in all categories, although it is hoped that there will be more to come in the three Junior Sections.

Experienced help

It has also been confirmed that the organisation of the contests will be in the experienced hands of Ian and Judith Beckett, who in the past few years have been instrumental in organising the successful youth events on the weekend.

A Butlins spokesperson told 4BR: "We are delighted that Ian and Judith have taken on this special event to help alleviate the workload that is placed on contest controller Brian Eggleshaw. Their experience has been invaluable to us over the years.

We have been highly encouraged by the response so far, but we would love to welcome more youngsters in the Junior Slow Melody (under 12), Slow Melody (under 17) and Junior Quartet (under 17) categories.

Don't be afraid to enter and please get in touch — there are generous prizes to be won and a great deal of prestige in becoming a British Open Champion and following in the footsteps of some of the greatest names in banding history."

Prizes

The competitions will see a first prize of £300 to the new Intermediate Slow Melody winner (under 17), with £200 to the Junior Slow Melody winner (under 12), and the newly crowned Junior Quartet (under 17).

The Senior Quartet victor will receive £500, with each category also carrying the additional honour of being proclaimed British Open champion.

The Junior Slow Melody, Intermediate Slow Melody and Junior Quartet Championships will take place on Friday 11th January (starting at 6.00pm), whilst the Senior Solo and Senior Quartet Championships take place on Sunday January 13th (starting at 9.00am).
