Family baton ties continue at Usk

After 15 years at the helm Jeff Jones steps aside to allow his son Jamie to take up the baton at Usk Town

Usk won the National title under Jeff (third from left in tie) in 2015

After a remarkable fifteen years as conductor of the Usk Band in south Wales, Musical Director Jeff Jones has decided to step down.

During his tenure, the band undertook two CD recordings, numerous concerts, went on two tours to Germany and moved into their own band room.

Crowning glory

However, after deciding to return to the contesting scene in 2012 they went on to claim the Fourth Section National Championship of Great Britain title in 2015, made up largely of players developed by Jeff and his wife Lea.

A spokesperson told 4BR: "We are so grateful for the wonderful experiences we've shared with Jeff at the helm and wish to thank him publicly for such a long and dedicated service to the organisation."

The good news for the band is that Jeff won't be leaving the band, as he has filled the vacant flugel horn seat, whilst the MD role has been filled by his son, Jamie.

It's a bit of a strange feeling to swap playing for leading it. I've learnt a great deal from my father and look forward to continuing his great workJamie Jones

Father and now son

Jamie is certainly no musical stranger, having played solo euphonium throughout Jeff's tenure. He also recently led the band back to Cheltenham for the first time since their National triumph, taking up the baton for the band's Third Section Welsh Regional Championship appearance.

He told 4BR: "It's a bit of a strange feeling to swap playing for leading it. I've learnt a great deal from my father and look forward to continuing his great work.

Coming from Usk it makes me extremely proud to be named MD, and especially now that we can look forward to our National Final appearance."
