The hat-trick Yorkshire Area champion will give the world premiere of a new composition by the renowned American composer William Himes at their forthcoming Lincoln Cathedral Concert.

Black Dyke will give the premiere at Lincoln Cathedral

A new overture by the renowned American composer William Himes will be given a world premiere by Black Dyke at their forthcoming concert at Lincoln Cathedral on April 28th.

Intrepid Overture

Entitled, 'Intrepid Overture', Himes explained that it is inspired by a sense of adventure.

"When I considered the background on the city of Lincoln kindly provided by Philip Pearson, it occurred to me that the common link between three of the local historic luminaries cited, William the Conqueror, William Byrd and Gilbert Vinter was that in their respective worlds and ventures, they were fearless.

The work therefore attempts to convey that — the spirit of adventure, 'go for it' attitude which is so refreshing and pioneering."

The work will form part of the event that was secured by Market Rasen Band as a successful Arts Council England 'Grants for the Arts Programme' award.

Time and date

The concert on Saturday 28th April (7.30pm) will bring to close a day of workshops led by Director of Music, Prof Nicholas Childs, who will conduct Black Dyke in world premieres of works by William Himes and Paul Lovatt-Cooper.

These will then be recorded by Market Rasen Band for a new CD release.

Grants for the Arts is funded by the National Lottery supported using public funding by Arts Council England and this award is one of the latest to recognise Black Dyke's unique role in helping promote brass band music making throughout the UK.
