It has been announced that the renowned conductor Ivan Meylemans will lead the European Youth Brass Band at the 2018 European Championship Festival in Utrecht.
The news was confirmed by EBBA and Zimihc, the Utrecht based music and theatre arts production company which is organising the festival in the Dutch city.
Concert appearances
The European Youth Band will give a number of concert appearances during the festival week, including at the final of the European Soloists Competition, the official Opening Ceremony, the Gala Concert and before the results of the European Youth Brass Band Championship.
Test pieces
The works that will test the bands in the European Youth Championships have also been revealed, with the EBBA Music Commission choosing two works from British composers for the Development and Premier Sections.
Bands in the Development Section will include Philip Sparke's 'Valarius Variations' in their programmes, with Michael Ball's 'Chaucer's Tunes' performed in the Premier Section.
EBBA Music Commission, Chairman Paul Hindmarsh told 4BR: "Michael Ball's piece was originally prepared for the top section of the National Youth Championships of Great Britain 20 years ago, and it's been chosen for youth and adult competitions a number of times since.
Both works are based on traditional tunes with links to a number of European countries, so we hope the bands enjoy preparing and playing them."
