Eden offers Meditation for Remembrance

Composer Matt Eden has worked alongside Derwent Brass to bring a timely reminder of the ultimate sacrifice of those who fought at the horrific Battle of Passchendaele.

Derwent Brass will continue its musical collaboration with Black Dyke Band's Young Composer in Residence, Matt Eden, with a new work to premiered at their forthcoming Festival of Remembrance concert.

Supported with funds from Brass Band England's Normal Jones Trust, it is entitled 'Meditation', and reflects on the horrific loss of life at the Battle of Passchendaele, one of the bloodiest conflict areas of the First World War.

Reflective nature

Matt told 4BR: "I was delighted to have been approached again by Derwent Brass, having composed a piece for their 25th anniversary celebrations earlier this year.

Matt explained that the reflective nature of 'Meditation' sees it begin in a dark, ambiguous manner, with fragments of hymn-like melodies scattered across the band.

Gradually the music brightens until it arrives at a more settled texture that features soloists with intertwining melodies, reminiscent of Elgar or Strauss. After a pause, the piece returns to ambiguity; fading away to nothing and lacking complete resolution.

Appropriate

The composer added: "I hope that the piece will provide a moment for reflection with appropriate solemnity for the occasion, whilst still being an enjoyable addition to the repertoire.

I always enjoy working with Derwent Brass who are genuine supporters of new music and who are never afraid to explore new avenues. I'm looking forward to working with them on this premiere and hopefully in the future."
