Students at the University of Huddersfield (UoH) will now have their studies supervised by new Head of Brass, following the appointment of the highly respected trombonist Richard Ward.

The fourth-generation Yorkshire born brass player studied at Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Academy of Music and has been a London-based trombone player for over 20 years.

Wide experience

He has played with many major major orchestras and ensembles, performed in over 30 high profile West End musicals and has an extensive CV of film, television, classical and pop release soundtrack credits to his name.

He has also been a very familiar presence in the banding world, having led Zone One Brass, the band in residence at the Royal College of Music to four appearances at the Albert Hall National Finals.

Leading educator

As an educator, Richard has worked on many community, learning and participation projects, and was co-creator of the acclaimed education project 'Brass Tracks' which won the 'Outstanding Musical Collaboration' accolade at the London Music Awards in 2014.

As a conductor and coach he has worked with many youth groups, including the Palestine Youth Orchestra and Trinity Laban Conservatoire, as well as conducting professional ensembles, including the Philharmonia Orchestra.

International reputation

Deputy Head of Music and Drama at the University of Huddersfield, Dr Lisa Colton told 4BR: "We are looking forward to the opportunity to work with Richard, whose international reputation as a performer will further bolster the department's established reputation for brass playing."

Great place for brass players

Meanwhile, Richard added: "I feel like a fresher! This is such a great place for brass players to develop as musicians. You won't be shackled here, just encouraged to grow and experiment in a friendly, supportive environment.

He added: "The standard of teaching is very high, with tutors who really know how to improve young players. Students have the advantage of being part of a large University with all its diversity, but also in a compact brass department where they will receive focus and attention. I'm excited to be part of it."
