4BR has been informed of the death of Roy Bennett (centre), a former Chairman of the Penclawdd Band from west Wales, and the first Chairman of the National Youth Brass Band of Wales. He died peacefully in his sleep on 18th September.
Supporter
A primary school headteacher by profession, he attended the early residential courses of the National Youth Band of Wales as a house tutor, whilst his son, Mark played flugel horn and cornet.
He was also an enthusiastic supporter of the highly successful West Glamorgan Youth Band, working alongside his friend and conductor Tony Small in Swansea.
Saddened
Tony told 4BR: "Everyone associated with Penclawdd Band and I am sure throughout the brass banding community of Wales, is saddened by the news of Roy's death.
He was a wonderful man and a very fine musician in his own right. He had a tremendous singing voice that was heard in many leading amateur shows, as well as on the band bus after a contest or concert if he could be persuaded. He will be greatly missed."
