In a shock announcement, soprano star Kevin Crockford has relinquished his position with Grimethorpe Colliery Band with immediate effect.
Talking to 4BR, he said that although he felt 'sad' at having to end what has been his third stint with the Yorkshire outfit, he also thought it 'was the right time' after growing weary of the demands of high profile full time banding.
During his career Kevin has already helped bands to four European Championship titles, eight National victories and six British Open successes.
100%
"I've given things a great deal of thought,"he told 4BR. "I'm sad to make the decision, but it was the right time. I've always given 100% to my banding commitment and I've just grown weary of it.
After 40 years I want to have a break from the additional demands and return in a way I can enjoy things.
I still love playing, so have no intention of hanging up my instrument. I still want to play and be successful at the top level for a few more years yet, but perform and then go home. In that way I know I can still give the 100% required but in a slightly different way."

Wonderful highs
He added: "Grimethorpe are going down a path, which with all respect, is not for me, but I do hope to see them prosper and to become the best once again. Time shall tell I suppose, but I truly do hope so.
I have given well over 13 years of dedication and commitment and enjoyed some wonderful highs with the band — from the contest wins to the appearances at the Proms in 2008 and that amazing recent 'Brassed Off'' concert at the Royal Albert Hall. I've also made some truly wonderful friends who I hope I'll have more time to meet up with now.
I'm definitely not gone for good though, so we'll just see what the future might bring!"
