The closing date for one of the UKs most successful young composer competitions has been extended.
Entrants now have until the 1st June to send in their works for consideration for the Nock Deighton Challenge for Young Composers.
Two categories
The competition, which has two categories, is open to anyone under the age of 18 on 1st September 2017, or under the age of 21 on 1st September 2017. The winner in each age group will win £150, with the runner-up getting £50.
Over the past few years winners have gone on to make a name for themselves within the banding world. The 2014 and 2015 winner was Daniel Hall, who recently saw his work 'Smoke Sketches' used at the National Youth Championships of Great Britain. He has also had published works performed by the likes of Grimethorpe and is the current Young Composer in Residence with Tredegar Band.
The 2016 winner was Samuel Shelley, who plays percussion in Cannock Citadel Salvation Army Band and is also a member of the Salvation Army's West Midland Youth Band.
Adjudicator
The adjudicator this year will be the respected composer Dave Collins, who has widespread experience of writing for the brass bands at all levels, and who is currently working on a project with Schott Music Publishing to adapt a number of works for band of the British minimalist composer Steve Martland.
