Report & Results: 2017 LBBA Solo Contest

There was a fine turn out of playing talent both young and slightly older for the new Leicestershire Brass Band Association Slow Melody, Duet & Quartet competition at Loughborough Endowed Schools.

LBBA
A new venue certainly helped with the success of the contest this year.

The Leicestershire Brass Band Association recently hosted its annual open Slow Melody, Duet & Quartet competition at Loughborough Endowed Schools campus — the first time the event has been held there after many successful years in Groby.

The venue will also be the home for the LBBA Open Brass Band Contest in November, and the superb facilities and performance halls provided an ideal setting for a great day of competitive action, with both competitors and supporters quick to provide positive feedback to the Association.

Revitalised

LBBA Secretary Lesley Bentley told 4BR: "Moving any contest venue is always a gamble, but we couldn't be more pleased with the facilities and staff at Loughborough Endowed Schools, which has revitalised this contest.

The Leicestershire Association would like to thank all the bands who entered, for their continued support."

Winners

The premier 'Open Slow Melody' competition saw George Newbould, principal cornet of Thoresby Band, take the crown by narrowly beating Brighouse & Rastrick's bass trombonist Stephen Lomas.

Meanwhile, in the 'Open Air-Varie', Patricia Woodings from Newhall took the accolade, whilst in the individual age and Junior Sections, Shirland Welfare Training continued their fine run of success, in particular with brothers Jack and Luke Newborough, who collected a haul of silverware between them.

In addition to wins in the 'Slow Melody', 'Air-Varie' and 'Sight Reading' sections, the rising tenor horn star Luke Newborough once again collected the Harry Bray Memorial Trophy and the title of 2017 overall LBBA Junior Champion.
