In early 2016 he joined Wingates, before moving on to Leeds College of Music to study for a degree in Jazz Music.

A family friend told 4BR: "Matthew loved performing and always jumped at the opportunity to help out different bands, such as Leyland, Blackburn & Darwen and many others.

He was a popular member of a number of other ensembles, including fulfilling his passion for jazz with the Lancashire Youth Jazz Orchestra."

They added: "Matthew was a vibrant and inspirational instrumentalist who loved all types of music, and will be terribly missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his parents, David and Susan, his sister Holly, extended family and his many friends."
