The Metropolitan Division Music & Gospel Arts Department in conjunction with the Territorial Music & Gospel Arts Department recently hosted an open rehearsal with the Chicago Staff Band (CSB) led by conductor Bramwell Tovey.
The opportunity for a Salvation Army ensemble to collaborate with the renowned maestro attracted over 70 visitors to the Chicago Staff Band bandroom.
Inspiring rehearsal
Salvationists, wind band directors, brass band conductors and conducting professors all gathered to enjoy some light refreshments and chat prior to watching an inspiring rehearsal.
The evening was organised by the Salvation Army Metropolitan Division's Director of Music & Gospel Arts, Dr. Jonathan Corry who heard that Bram was in Chicago to conduct a 'Gershwin Spectacular' with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Experiences
The Principal Conductor of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra was delighted to be able to make the musical detour, and at the beginning of the rehearsal spent time playing hymn tunes before launching into his own composition, 'Deo Gloria', 'The Triumph of Peace' (Eric Ball) and 'Just as I am' (Wilfred Heaton), interspersed with recalling his experiences working on the pieces and meeting the composers.
It was such a thrill to have Bram with us, and to see the wide interest that this event generatedDr Jonathan Corry.
Thrill
Dr. Corry told 4BR: "It was such a thrill to have Bram with us, and to see the wide interest that this event generated.
I'm indebted to him and the support which was given to the event from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, The Chicago Staff Band and conductor Dr Harold Burgmayer."
