One of the great pioneering feats of aviation is to be celebrating in West Wales this weekend when Burry Port Town Band will present the UK premiere of 'Stillness' — The story of Amelia Earhart in Burry Port', written composer Tom Davoren.
The concert on 4th March (7.30pm) will not only celebrate the historic day in 1928 when the aviatrix touched down in the town from the USA to become the first woman to fly the Atlantic Ocean, but also marks the emergence of Welsh culture across the globe.
Guests
The performance will feature the band with guest conductor, and Director of Bands at the University of Saskatchewan (Canada), Dr. Darrin Oehlerking, the Brass Ensemble of the Royal Air Force Regiment, and Flt. Lt. Christopher I'Anson.
Darrin Oehlerking will also fly across the Atlantic for the event, whilst there will be a fascinating pre-concert talk on the historical significance of Earhart and her landing in Burry Port (6.45pm).
Education events
Earlier in the day there will be a series of education and collaboration events hosted by the musicians of the Brass Ensemble of the Royal Air Force Regiment for young brass and percussion musicians, culminating in a massed bands concert.
Composer Tom Davoren told 4BR: "I'm delighted that the brass band premiere of 'Stillness' will take place in such an exciting concert.
The story of Amelia Earhart is inspiring in itself, but to have world-class musicians such as the Brass Ensemble of the Royal Air Force Regiment and Dr. Oehlerking involved in the project, along with workshops open for any young musician to join in the activities, will be sure to make it a wonderful event for the whole community."
