After spreading the Christmas spirit to local communities around Norfolk since November it's time for the musicians from Stalham Brass Band and their MD Tim Thirst to enjoy a well-earned break from the festive tradition of Mumping.
Carols
The organisation has performed at various Street Fairs, shops Care Homes, community concerts and services playing carols — or mumping for over 150 years. The term originates from St. Thomas's Day — December 21st, the shortest day of the year.
Mumpers
It was also known as Mumping Day, when the poor went begging to the homes of wealthy landowners, probably singing to increase their appeal.
In Norfolk these were known as Mumpers. In other parts of the country it is known as 'going gooding', 'going Thomasing' and 'going Tommying'.
