Black Dyke will link up with one of the country's most acclaimed iPad artists as part of an innovative community arts project in Tibshelf in Derbyshire next year.
Mik Godley has been creating amazing art on the ground breaking tablet computer since it was initially unveiled in 2010, and has gone on to produce a remarkable catalogue of stunning works encompassing landscapes to personal portraits.
Community base scheme
The Chesterfield College lecturer will now be part of the community based scheme funded by Bolsover District Council through their Planning Policy for Public Art linked to a new Keep Moat Homes development at Mansfield Road Tibshelf.
The project celebrates the unique history of the Tibshelf area, and will see Black Dyke link up with composers Philip Sparke and Jonathan Bates, as well as percussion virtuoso Simone Rebello
A former Derbyshire Poet Laureate Matt Black will produce a poetry film narration at the event by BBC Radio 2 Listen to the Band Presenter Frank Renton. The project which commenced early 2016 will celebrate its finale on 18th March next year.
Music commission
The music for Mik's commission, composed by Jonathan Bates, will be performed by Black Dyke Band converted to a time lapse film of his unique art.
It will develop on a multi-media screen before the audience at the premiere next year along with the help of the children from a number of local primary schools who will accompany the film with a percussion feature led by Simone Rebello.
A further film led by Martyn Harris of Absolute Video entitled 'A Tibshelf Tale' with music composed by Philip Sparke will be performed by Black Dyke at the event.
Exciting avenues
Mik told 4BR: "As an artist I have always looked to be able to express my work in different ways — but the arrival of the iPad opened up new and exciting avenues to do just that.
I was initially given one and soon got hooked on the creative arts programmes. As the iPads developed, so did the sophistication of the software, and I was able to explore the different ways it could be used."
Remarkable
He added: "It is a remarkable piece of equipment, and one that I think offers a great deal of scope and enjoyment to an artist — from the amateur to the professional.
You can now draw in enormous detail, make subtle changes in texture and shading, and create a video to show how you are progressing. If you are lucky enough to get one for Christmas give it a go — it's great fun."

Dyke in action
Mik is also looking forward to being part of the Tibshelf project and has already worked with Black Dyke — capturing the band in action at a recent concert in Sheffield.
"As I come from Yorkshire, brass bands are an important part of my own heritage, so to work with Black Dyke was a great privilege. They are a great subject matter to capture and I really enjoyed my day with them. It's given me plenty of ideas for what I'm sure will be a great community event."
