Norway prepares for Siddis entertainment

The Siddis Entertainment Championships take place in Stavanger this weekend — and 4BR will be there to report on the action.

Siddis
The defending Siddis Champion Stavanger will be looking to make it five in a row this year.

4BR will be continuing its coverage of major European championships this weekend by flying to Stavanger for the Siddis Entertainment contest.

Started in 1983, it has developed into one of the world's leading entertainment competitions — first for Elite level bands, but later to encompass the First (1985), Second (1993), Third (1995) and Fourth (2010) Sections.

Innovation and invention

It now attracts a line-up of domestic competitors second only to the Norwegian National Championships in number, whilst it maintains an enviable reputation for encouraging innovation and invention — from cleverly themed programmes to single items such as John Cage's 4'32".

The event is hosted by the Stavanger Band — the current holders of the Elite Division title for the past four years, although this year they will once again be faced with stiff competition from rivals such as Eikanger Bjorsvik, who have won the title on 15 occasions. The duo have won 23 of the 33 contests that have been held.

Musical creativity

Meanwhile, the transparent marking system also reflects the organiser's ethos to encourage musical creativity — but not at the expense of being hampered by prescriptive tick-box adjudication elements.

The single day event is based at the impressive Stavanger Konserthus and its smaller Zetlitz auditorium as well as the unique Kuppelhallen which hosted the European Championship in 2008.

Earth moving

4BR Editor Iwan Fox will be hoping that there will be no repeat of the earthquake tremor that formed part of the recent trip to the Italian National Championships in Ascoli Piceno, although there are sure to be a number of performances that will shake the foundations.

Live coverage will be given of the First and Elite Division events which start at 9.00am (local time).
