Bob Childs resigns from Grimethorpe

The three year tenure of Dr Robert Childs at Grimethorpe Colliery Band has come to an end.

British Open winner
Under his direction Grimethorpe won the British Open for the first time since 1991.

4BR has been informed that after three years of travelling from his home in south Wales to Yorkshire, Dr Robert Childs has resigned as the Musical Director of Grimethorpe Colliery Band.

Travel toll

Dr Childs told 4BR: "Having done the job for almost three years, the travelling has finally taken its toll. Commuting from South Wales to Yorkshire is a long journey and I'd like to spend more time at home with my family.

I've enjoyed my time at Grimethorpe as Musical Director and wish the band every success in the future."

British Open and Brass in Concert titles

During his tenure which started at the National Finals in 2013, Grimethorpe regained the Brass in Concert title in 2104 for the first time since 2010, as well as the British Open Championship for the first time since 1991. It was his sixth success at the event since the year 2000.

The band was also runner-up at the Yorkshire Area twice in 2014 and 2015 and again at Brass in Concert in 2015.

His last contest appearance with Grimethorpe was at the recent British Open where they came fifth.

Great things

Trustee Peter Haigh commented to 4BR: "We are sad to lose Bob as our Musical Director. He has worked hard during his time with us and achieved great things both on and off the conducting podium."

4BR understands a successor as MD will be announced in due course.
