Salford announces Black Dyke tutor duo

Katrina Marzella and Ben Riechton have joined the staff at the University of Salford as tutors on its renowned Band Musicianship course.

The Musical Arts Programme (incorporating Band Musicianship) at the University of Salford has announced the appointment of Katrina Marzella and Ben Riechton as baritone and soprano cornet tutors.

Internationally renowned

In conjunction with Dan Price, Dr Brett Baker and Tom Davoren, the renowned Musical Arts programme has been enhanced over its 30 year history by teaching from internationally renowned practitioners and educators, with the Black Dyke duo taking up their new roles to coincide with the expansion of the course into its new teaching and practice facility, New Adelphi, in September.

Leading tutors

Programme Leader Dr Brett Baker told 4BR: "I'm delighted that an increase in student numbers and our move to the main campus has allowed Salford to recruit leading tutors such as Katrina and Ben.

We now have even more opportunities to perform in Peel Hall, Maxwell Hall and a new theatre within New Adelphi — all giving huge advantages to students.

Admissions have been three times the level of 2015, but as we continue to expand we still are able to guarantee each student instrumentalist a seat in our large ensembles, as well as one to one lessons with our internationally renowned team of tutors."

Team

Brett revealed that students will now be able to work with the likes of not only Ben and Katrina, but also Richard Marshall, Gary Curtin, Mark Wilkinson, Les Niesh, Helen Varley, Les Storey, Billy Millar and Brian Taylor, as the University aims to equip students for professional careers.

Students with an interest in composing and arranging will also have the opportunity write for Salford's brass and wind bands, as well as smaller ensembles, whilst the choir and big band remain popular ensembles with those pursuing band elements of the course.

Unique aspects

He added: "There are several unique aspects to our undergraduate programme at Salford, including the allocation of marks to regular large ensemble activities and the offer of instruction in conducting, recording, arranging and composition throughout the degree course.

Salford provides a wonderful opportunity for students who wish to embark upon a professional musical career."
