One of brass banding's most successful cross-genre musical links is set to be renewed in the north east next week, when the renowned Indian musician Shri Sriram and the NASUWT Riverside Band give a welcome reprise performance of 'Just a Vibration'.
Unique fusion
The unique fusion of Indian classical music and a British brass band will form part of the week long contemporary GemArts Masala Festival being held at Sage Gateshead, with the performance taking place on Wednesday July 13th (7.30pm)
The brainchild of musician Shri Sriram, 'Just a Vibration' has gained widespread critical acclaim.
Project aims
The hypnotically cool blend of intricate Indian melodies allied to a throbbing brass band foundation has delighted listeners all over the UK, with Shri telling 4BR that he hopes other bands will now take the opportunity to explore connections with Indian music.
"That has always been one of the aims of the project,"he told 4BR yesterday. "The initial partnership with Hammonds Saltaire Band made an immediate musical impact and that has continued brilliantly.
I believe the unique fusion of musical elements makes for a wonderfully intoxicating mix — and I hope 'Just a Vibration' can inspire others to seek out equally as exciting links."
Future links
That also includes future performances of 'Just a Vibration', with Shri telling 4BR that there are future plans to link up with other bands throughout the UK.
"Ever since Hammonds Saltaire performed it with me at Brass in Concert we have been looking at developing the project further. The interest has just grown and grown.
It's great that the NASUWT Riverside Band are able to perform it with me at Sage Gateshead, and I'm hopeful that we can team up with other like-minded bands to take it to all corners of the UK."
