Cory is looking forward to a very special 'Land of my Fathers' concert this weekend in Swansea, on what will be the second leg of its 'Home Nation Tour' supported by Arts Council Wales
First stop
The first stop-off was in Porthmadog last weekend — where a full house of over 400 fans and supporters packed into Y Ganolfan Arts Centre to hear the European, National and Brass in Concert champion perform a eclectic selection of repertoire, from 'The Thieving Magpie' by Rossini to 'Malambo' from 'Estancia' by Alberto Ginastera.
The band was joined by the Ysgol y Gader Girls Choir conducted by Carwyn Evans, who joined forces for performances of 'World in Union' and Karl Jenkins's 'Adiemus'.
Brilliant night
Musical Director Philip Harper told 4BR: "It was a brilliant night. The atmosphere was already jubilant following Wales's win against Slovakia in Euro 2016. Not surprisingly that also inspired the band and despite the sweltering temperatures on stage under the lights they delivered as well as Gareth Bale and his players. Our encore of 'Calon Lan' was spine tingling."
Presentations
During the evening a number of notable presentations were made — including to Geraint Jones, father of Cory President and S4C presenter Morgan Jones, who has been involved with the Trefor Band for an incredible 60 years, over 50 of which as Musical Director.
Also honoured was John Glyn Jones, who has notched up over half a century of service to brass bands in the area — and who was the man who first taught a certain Cory solo euphonium player, Glyn Williams.
Father's Day Concert
The next instalment of the Tour of Wales will see Cory perform a special 'Father's Day' concert at the Brangwyn Hall in Swansea (Sunday 19th — 3.00pm), where they will be joined by the West Glamorgan Youth Band, which is preparing for its upcoming tour of Italy.
Cory's principal players have been working with the band in recent masterclasses and rehearsals.
It's a great chance to take fathers out for the afternoon. Alternatively, if your dad doesn't like music, you can send him to the pub and come along with everyone else to enjoy the brilliant music making yourself!Philip Harper
Slap-up Sunday lunch
Given the date, the Swansea concert will also be a celebration particularly for dads, as Philip Harper urged: "It's a great chance to take fathers out for the afternoon after a slap-up Sunday lunch — and we have family tickets available to buy.
Alternatively, if your dad doesn't like music, you can send him to the pub and come along with everyone else to enjoy the brilliant music making yourself!"
