The East Lancashire Concert Band was recently visited by BBC radio producer Andy Denwood to prepare for a documentary for the BBC World Service about the Battle of the Somme and the involvement of the Accrington Pals Battalion.
Parade
As Accrington Old Band in 1914, they led the first parade of the newly formed Accrington Pals Battalion through the town, before the men left for what became one of the most infamous conflicts of the whole war.
584 'Pals' were either killed or injured on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
