Mumping tradition still going strong in Stalham

The festive tradition of musical mumping is still going strong in Stalham.

Stalham

After spreading the Christmas spirit to communities around Norfolk since November at concerts, fairs and community events, the musicians from Stalham Brass rounded off their festive music making — or 'mumping' as it's locally referred to — with their regular visit to Stalham Old Hall for a carol concert.

Half century

The 28 strong main band has made the annual visit for over 150 years with Director of Music Tim Thirst notching up a personal half century.

St Thomas's Day

The term mumping originates from St. Thomas's Day (December 21st) which was also known as Mumping Day, when the poor went begging to the homes of wealthy landowners, probably singing to increase their appeal.

In Norfolk those going singing door-to-door were known as Mumpers.
