A family spokesperson told 4BR; "Charlie was a bandsman first and foremost, and known to virtually everyone involved in North West banding.

His life was dedicated to his beloved Tyldesley Band where all his sons and grandsons started off, before moving onto play and conduct with some of the most famous bands of all."

80 year association

They added: "Charlie never left Tyldesley Band — playing a variety of instruments and also fulfilling the roles of treasurer, librarian, secretary and chairman in his 80 year association.

He will always be remembered for teaching hundreds of pupils in the backroom at Derwent Street and inspiring generations of bandsman with his love and enthusiasm for the movement. His like will never be seen again.

The funeral will be a celebration of his wonderful life with music and stories that have become folklore in and around Tyldesley."
