The critically acclaimed ballet production 'Dark Arteries' — the artistic collaboration featuring the Rambert Ballet performing to a demanding brass band score written by composer Gavin Higgins, started its nationwide tour last week in Salford.
Large audiences
Following its highly successful week-long premiere at Sadler's Wells in London earlier in the year alongside Tredegar Band, Rambert has included the 35 minute work in its latest UK tour, which will also see performances over the next two months in Bradford and Edinburgh.
The production at the imposing Lowry Theatre featured the Fairey Band, who provided the musical score for the three night run played out to large audiences.
Critical acclaim
Once again the collaboration gained widespread critical acclaim: 'superb performances danced to uplifting music makes for a winning combination' was the response of the arts critic of the Manchester Evening News, who went on to describe Fairey as being in 'fine fettle' on a 'challenging score'.
And despite the production taking place close to their forthcoming appearance at the Royal Albert Hall this weekend, Fairey were delighted to have taken on the role with the world's leading contemporary dance company.
Wonderful opportunity
Band Manager Nigel Beasley told 4BR: "It was wonderful opportunity to perform with Rambert — and on a work that has certainly brought brass bands to a new audience.
This was our first appearance at the magnificent Lowry Theatre, which is so close to our musical home, and in working with such an outstanding professional ensemble as the Rambert Ballet."
Privilege
He added: "We have thoroughly enjoyed working with the artistic leaders Paul Hoskins, Mark Baldwin and Gavin Higgins and especially with the dancers and conductor Jonathan Lo.
'Dark Arteries' is a ground breaking work for brass bands, and it has been a real privilege to have been asked to be part of its UK tour.
It's certainly given us a huge artistic lift to complement our continued high profile 'Acid Brass' ventures, as well as boosting our stamina for the Albert Hall."

Thrilled
Composer Gavin Higgins was also thrilled with Fairey's performance. "'Dark Arteries' does ask a great, great deal of a world class band — especially in a medium that is very different to their usual musical comfort zone.
The Fairey band did a wonderful job — and the response of the audience on each night certainly showed that."
