The death has been reported of Davy Hunter, the respected President of the Ballyduff Silver Band in Northern Ireland.
The Uncle
Davy, or 'The Uncle' as he was known to many, joined the band in 1955 at the invitation of his lifelong friend, Ross Aiken. His main instrument was the bass, either Eb or Bb, depending on what was required, but he also went on to become a tireless worker, assisting with transport, encouraging young players and fund raising events.
Enjoyed
A spokesperson told 4BR: "He particularly enjoyed the social aspects of banding, especially trips to the Isle of Man contest in the late 1980's and his annual pilgrimage to the Brass in Concert Championship.
A large number of the band also attended this contest, and still do, and for many years stayed in the same hotel. Such was the popularity that one section of it became known among the group as 'The David Hunter Suite'."
Without doubt, Davy's favourite performance of the day was always came with Leyland Band — especially conducted by Richard Evans — someone who he greatly admired.
One of banding's true gentlemen; Davy will be sadly missed not only by Ballyduff Band, but also the wider band community in Northern IrelandBallyduff Silver Band
Great delight
Due to ill health, Davy took early retirement, but still kept playing as long as he was able.
After he retired from playing he took an active interest in the running of the band, and one of his great delights was the establishment of Ballyduff Brass, the junior section of Ballyduff Band in 2009.
Davy always made the effort to attend their end of term concert to present the prizes and awards.
Sadly missed
The spokesperson added: "One of banding's true gentlemen; Davy will be sadly missed not only by Ballyduff Band, but also the wider band community in Northern Ireland."
