The Association of Brass Band Adjudicators has released their officially sanctioned test piece reviews on the forthcoming National Final set works to be used at Cheltenham this weekend.
Bold move
In a bold move, each work has been given a detailed analysis by an experienced composer or conductor.
As in the past, AoBBA has been keen to point out that each review is just that, and no more.
Not blueprints
They are not 'blueprints' to unequivocally copy in a bid to gain reward from the judges in the box — all of who may have their own ideas on each piece.
They do however offer detailed guidance on the technical and musical areas of each composition that AoBBA feels adjudicators could well consider in each performance.

Works
The First Section work, 'The Alchymist's Journal' by Kenneth Hesketh has been reviewed by the respected conductor, composer and arranger Phillip Littlemore, whilst the vastly experienced David Hirst has given his impressions on the Second Section set work 'The Snaring of the Sun' by Stephen Roberts on which he will judge in Cheltenham.
Composer and conductor Tom Davoren has cast his eye over the Third Section work, 'The Graces of Love' by Oliver Waespi, whilst conductor and adjudicator Sarah Groarke-Booth has looked closely at the Fourth Section test piece, 'Visions' by Dan Price
