The Youth Brass Band of North Rhine Westphalia has been performing to one of its largest ever audiences after taking part in the annual Protestant Church Festival at the Grugahalle in Essen in Germany.
Religious events
The event was run by the CVJM Westbund organisation and celebrates the historic participation in church services of what are called 'Posaunenchore' — brass ensembles accompany various religious events.
This year the organisers invited Youth Brass Band of North Rhine Westphalia to take part in the festival (above) — something of a first as Posaunenchore ensembles do not usually contain cornets or tenor horns.
Hymn of the Highlands
However, after giving performances of 'Dundonnell' from 'Hymn of the Highlands' perhaps that will now change as MD Martin Schadlich told 4BR:
"There were over 2000 musicians in the hall — and none really knew what to expect. The reaction to our performance was amazing — especially as the music usually played has a very serious religious content."
He added: "This is another important step in the band's musical development as we seek to try and encourage more and more brass players to enjoy playing in a brass band."
