The time consuming travel problems that have come with making a 250 mile round trip from his home in Rugby to get to rehearsals twice a week in Stockport, has led to Paul Bennett reluctantly end his solo horn role with the Fairey Band.
"After two years, it's finally got the better of me,"he told 4BR. "It's been a very difficult decision to make but sometimes it's been taking three hours or more to get to band — and then I have to get back home.
As much as I have enjoyed every minute of playing with such a fantastic bunch of people in a brilliant band, it's simply no longer feasible."
Integral part
Paul has played an integral part in the Fairey Band renaissance under Garry Cutt — one that has seen them claim back to back North West Area Championship titles, become serious contenders for major title honours and gain critical acclaim for their concert and recording projects.
Huge positives
"That's been one of the huge positives from racking up the miles each week,"Paul added.
"Garry's musical approach is one I always feel so comfortable with, and the organisation and musical outlook has become increasingly diverse and progressive. It's been a great honour to play for Fairey and to help them to once again achieve the success they deserve."
Hard act to follow
Although sad to see Paul literally call time with them, Fairey Band Manager Nigel Beasley told 4BR that his commitment had been immense over the past two years.
"Paul will be a very hard act to follow — both as an outstanding player and as a highly motivated band member. Paul has never used the travel time as an excuse — his commitment has always been 100%. We wish him well in whatever musical direction he now undertakes."

Defend title
Paul added: "After returning from the USA with River City Brass, I'm keen to further develop my solo work, and I certainly want to defend my Besson International title at the Foden's solo competition later in the year.
I'm now looking forward to spending less time driving on a motorway though."
