The set works that will be performed at the 35th Dutch National Brass Band Championships in Utrecht later this year have been announced.
Terra Incognita
The Championship Division bands will have a brand new work to perform -'Terra Incognita' (Hidden Land) by composer Jan de Haan.
The five linked movements are inspired by the experiences of early pioneers who set off on perilous voyages of discovery in search of new lands: 'Journey into the Unknown'; 'Land of Mountains and Streams'; 'Desert Land'; 'Land of Enchantment' and 'Land of Ice and Fire'.
The composition is dedicated to three brass playing members of his family — Hermanda, Lianne and Erik.
Beecher Variations
The Dutch National Championship organisers have also commissioned a new work for the Fourth Division — 'Beecher Variations' by Stephen Bulla — based on the famous 1870 hymn tune.
First Division contenders are faced with the stern test of John Golland's 'Sounds', initially written in 1974, but later used as the set work at the 1993 European Championships, whilst Jacob Vilhelm Larsen's popular 'The Saga of Tyrfing' inspired by the Nordic myth of malevolent sword making dwarves will test the powers of the bands in the Second Division.
'Triptych' by Philip Sparke, initially commissioned by the Swiss Brass Band Federation in 1990 is the set work for the Third Division.
