New elite band to lead Victorian future

A brand new elite level band which aims to showcase musical excellence and youth development is set to be launched in Australia.

A brand new elite level brass band is to be formed in the Australian state of Victoria.

Victoria Brass is the brainchild of three-time National Championship winning conductor, Mark Ford (above), who told 4BR that he had been interested in bringing the region's elite brass and percussion players together for some time.

Great excitement

"One small Facebook post has, virtually overnight, gathered momentum and generated a level of interest that has filled me with great excitement,"he told 4BR.

"I knew that there would be interest, but the range of people wanting to be involved and the amazing growth of the idea has shown me how strong the passion for brass bands is in our State of Victoria.

The last time anything like this was done was Melbourne Brass in 1972/73, when the band was conducted by Geoffrey Brand. I think it's definitely time to do it again!"

It is envisaged that Victoria Brass will come together for specific performances and projects and will rehearse only in the period leading up to an event, the timing of which will ensure players will not face commitment conflicts with their existing bands.

No conflicts

Mark added: "Most of the players in Victoria Brass hold important positions in their own band. It's important to ensure that there are no conflicts in priorities that would make it difficult for these elite players to participate."

He also explained that the musical vision of the band is to perform cutting edge repertoire, without the constraints and limitations of competition rules, showcasing the best of what banding in Australia can produce.

Excited

Mark continued: "I'm particularly excited by the opportunity to promote new compositions and provide a vehicle for new composers to have their works performed.

We will be able to perform compositions that would not be considered as appropriate for a National level competition, but that are amazing works deserving of a top level band to perform them."

Future links

Mark also outlined his view that an important part of the future of Victoria Brass will be to build lasting connections with the broader musical and brass band community, with progressive programmes helping to develop young brass players in the state.

He concluded: "The future of banding lies with developing young players. By showcasing what top level playing can produce, and by working with them to develop their skills and playing, we are growing a strong future for this genre of music that will endure and strengthen in this State."

First rehearsal

Victoria Brass will come together for its first rehearsal in August with plans for an inaugural performance in September. Victoria Brass will also make project announcements and details of its first Musical Advisor and Composer in Residence.
