4BR has been informed of the death of David Atherton, on Thursday 7th May.
Many will remember him as a fine cornet player who graced the stage with bands such as the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, Wigan Boys Club, Pemberton, Fairey Aviation, Prescot Cables, Cammell Lairds, and latterly Mirlees Works, Bold Miners and Latchford Bands, where he played alongside his wife Valerie.
He was also a member of the popular ‘Wigan Unattached Quartet’ who won many titles back in the 1960’s conducted by William Haydock.
Great demand
His brother in law, John Maines, told 4BR: “David was in great demand as a player, and I remember well his full rich sound and amazing technique. His solo playing in pieces such as ‘Fairies of the Waters’ and Arban’s ‘Carnival of Venice’ was the equal of any.”
He added: “Whilst not playing for a number of years he always followed what was happening in the band world and was an avid music lover. He was a native of Wigan, and proud of it — and was a great family man. He leaves a loving and close family and will be sadly missed.”
