A new initiative aimed at increasing the participation of youngsters in brass bands in Germany is set to take place later this month.
Open invitation
Led by conductor Martin Schädlich, the Youth Brass Band of the German state North-Rhine-Westphalia (YBB NRW) will be providing an open invitation to players from all over their geographical region, to come along and take part in a ‘Brass Band Week’ from the 30th March to the 2nd of April.
It is hoped that the event will attract both new and existing young brass players who wish to take up an interest in brass banding — and to start performing on a regular basis with the band itself.
Huge impression
Martin told 4BR: “In a short time the YBB NRW (above) has made a huge cultural impression in North-Rhine-Westphalia — from high profile concerts as ’Brass Band in Residence’ at the German Brass Festival ‘Sauerlandherbst’ for the last four years, to our upcoming performance at the European Composers Competition Final in Freiburg.”
He added: “Our new objective is to encourage more young players in the region to get involved with brass bands and become part of YBB NRW.”
Brass Band week
The ‘Brass Band Week’ will see delegates form a brass band under Martin’s direction, playing everything from pop music to traditional brass band repertoire, with players given the repertoire in advance of the event.
All brass and percussion players starting from the age of 12 who feel secure on their instruments and have a minimum of playing experience are invited to take part.

The week will take place at the ‘Musikbildungszentrum Südwestfalen’:
