The own choice selections of the Championship Section contenders and the panel of adjudicators who will make the all important decisions at the 2015 European Championships in Freiburg in May, have been announced.
No blockbuster premieres
As always there will be a great deal of guesswork now taking place throughout the banding continent, after it was revealed that works from the pens of some of most exciting compositional talent will be showcased — although there will be no world premieres of bespoke ‘blockbuster’ works this year.
Instead there will be three performances of ‘Audivi Media Nocte’ by Oliver Waespi, as well as a brace of Thomas Doss, ‘Trance’ and a double helping of ‘Journey of the Lone Wolf’ by Simon Dobson.
In addition there will be the first contest hearings of ‘Metropolis 1927 for Brass Band’ by Peter Graham and Wilfred Heaton’s ‘Partita for Brass Band’, reprises for former European set works ‘From Ancient Times’ by Jan van der Roost and ‘Vita Aeterna Variations’ by Alexander Comitas (Ed de Boer) and a second performance of ‘Symphony in Two Movements’ by Edward Gregson.
Scrutiny
The own choice selections will come under scrutiny by a panel of Garry Cutt, Christophe Jeanbourquin and Stig Nordhagen, with the set work, ‘The God Particle’ by Rolf Rudin being adjudicated by Thomas Doss, Mark Lys and Stephen Roberts.
Meanwhile, the Challenge Section event will also be judged by Thomas Doss, Mark Lys and Stephen Roberts, with Garry Cutt and Rieks van der Velde having the responsibily in the European Youth Championship.
The curtain raising European Composer Competition will be judged by Thomas Doss, Rolf Rudin and Paul Hindmarsh.
Exciting occasion
EBBA President, Ulf Rosenberg told 4BR: “We are pleased to announce the excellent jury teams who will evaluate the performances played by some of the best bands in the world.
We are also delighted to announce a selection of own choice music to match any of previous years.
In addition to new works and existing repertoire, we will also hear three works that first appeared as set work commissions for previous European Championships, which speaks volumes for the impact the event has had in recent years.”
Ulf added: “The 2015 EBBC is already a complete sell-out, so it promises to be a very exciting event.”
