The trombone quartet ‘Big Tone Bones’ was victorious at the most recent Ensemble Competition sponsored by Gevena Instruments held at the University of Salford.
Ensemble variety
A total of 13 ensembles competed for the David Horsfield Shield — including those made up of saxophones, horns, percussion, clarinets and tuba and euphoniums, with the winners certainly wowing the judges, Captain Daryl Powell from the Royal Marines, Peter Christian and Dr. Howard Evans.
In second place was the bass trombone duo of Andrew Crampton and Toby Bannan, whilst in third came the Adelphi Cornet Ensemble.
Close competition
The judges were keen to point out how close the competition had been this year, and particularly impressive was the number of student arrangements that were performed, with the overall prize for semester for the Best Composition / Arrangement going to trumpeter Shane Murray with his work entitled, ‘Fanfare’.
