Four budding young adjudicators will be working hard at St George’s Hall in Bradford this weekend after successfully applying to be chosen to be part of the Association of Brass Band Adjudicators (ABBA) and Yorkshire Regional Championship Committee’s ‘Youth Adjudication Panel’ initiative.
Two boys and two girls
Two boys and two girls will take what could be the first enjoyable step on the road to becoming a leading contest adjudicator, by being mentored by ABBA Secretary David Hirst throughout the Fourth Section contest, which takes place on Sunday morning, 8th March, (9.00am start) at St George’s Hall.
They will listen to all 11 bands on ‘An English Pastorale’ by Dean Jones, sat in front of the official adjudicator’s box in the auditorium, and will use the same remarks and results sheets as David Thornton and Sandy Smith to help them in their own judgment process.
Each lucky youngster will also be provided with a full score of the work.
Warm welcome
Regional Secretary Peggy Tomlinson told 4BR: “We have been delighted by the response to the initiative and will give a warm welcome to what could become some of the next generation of brass band judges.
We are sure they will have a wonderful time — and they are sure to learn so much about adjudication from David Hirst and our two official judges.”
Ask questions
After prize presentation, the Youth Panel, alongside David Hirst, will meet up with David Thornton and Sandy Smith to discuss how things went, to pick their brains and ask questions, and to find out more how they made their decisions — all over refreshments.

Free tickets
The Yorkshire Regional Committee will also give free tickets to the youngsters and their parents/guardians on the day, to stay and listen to the bands competing in the Championship Section on Sunday evening — and each will receive a CD recording of the band that they picked as the winners in the Fourth Section.
