The former Brighouse & Rastrick solo euphonium player Stephen Lord is hoping to bring the sound of brass back to the small seaside town of Seaton in East Devon — 100 years after it was last heard.
First World War
The town, which is situated on the famous ‘Jurassic Coast’ to the west of the mouth of the River Axe, last had a brass band at the outbreak of the First World War, but like hundreds of others, became defunct soon after hostilities continued into 1915.
Until now any thoughts about forming a new band in the area have been in the dreams of a few local musicians, but Stephen, who spent a wonderful decade at the famous West Riding band that included their last British Open victory in 1978, now hopes to make that a reality.
Potential
Stephen has teamed up with local musician Peter Motson to look into forming a new brass ensemble in Seaton, and believes that there is the potential to start something off.
“What form the ensemble will take remains to be seen,” he told 4BR today. “Since coming to the area (pictured above) a few years ago with my wife, I’ve thought there is a real opportunity here to try and set something up that could very well develop into something lasting.
It’s a wonderful place to live and enjoy life — so why not include a brass band of sorts?”
New players
A steering group has already been formed and has gathered together some instruments, music and stands — but now the ensemble is looking out for new players.
Stephen added: “There must be enough players in and around the area to start a small group in the first instance. Who knows what might develop as we add more players of varying standards into the band.”
Support
Peter Motson, who plays trombone, agreed: “If we can get together six or eight players who can play to a reasonable standard we must surely be on our way.
It’s our hope to establish a band that will represent our town and our community at Remembrance Sunday, Christmas festivities, Civic occasions and the like.”
Call our own
The initiative has already gained local support with, the Town Mayor, Cllr Sedgwick adding: “This is a new and exciting idea for Seaton.
Everyone loves a good brass band and it would be great for Seaton to have its very own. It would be tremendous to call on our own band for such events in the town. I would encourage all those interested to get involved and wish the organisers the best of luck.
Just imagine how wonderful it would be to have our own brass ensemble playing at the opening ceremony of the new Jurassic Centre later this year.”
