The brass band movement in the UK did in fact gain recognition in the 2015 New Year Honours List, with the well hidden announcement of a thoroughly deserved British Empire Medal to John Cowking for services to music in the Hodder Valley in Lancashire.
40 years of service
John has been the Musical Director of Slaidburn Silver Band for over 40 years, as well as being the highly respected organist at the Slaidburn Parish Church. The band, which is now a non-contesting ensemble from near Clitheroe, was formed in 1898, but has become an integral part of the local community since John took over the baton.
I’m thrilled and delighted to be recognised in this way — especially as it covers both music making with Slaidburn Band and through my local Parish ChurchJohn Cowking BEM
