4BR has been informed of the death of the eminent composer Arthur Butterworth MBE. He was 91.
Born in Manchester in 1923, he enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a highly respected professional trumpet player with the Scottish National Orchestra and the Halle, as well as conductor and teacher. He was made a MBE in 1995.
Compositional output
His compositional output included seven symphonies, eight concertos and several other large scale orchestral works.
His brass band output included ‘A Dales Suite’ written in 1964, as well as the 1981 European Championship test piece, ‘Caliban’ and the 1989 National Championship of Great Britain set work, ‘Odin’.
