No more Ratcliffe highs at Harrogate

The successful musical partnership between the Harrogate Band and MD Craig Ratcliffe has come to an end.

The Harrogate Band have announced the end of their successful musical partnership with conductor Craig Ratcliffe (above).

Sadness

A spokesperson told 4BR: “It's with sadness that we say goodbye to our MD who has given so much to the Harrogate Band and remains a good friend of the players.

We have enjoyed a period of rapid success and improvement under his baton since he became MD. He is a very special talent and we fully understand his need to balance his very busy professional and family life with his huge banding commitment.”

Craig first played solo euphonium with the band as well a serving on its committee and taking on the role of Bandmaster — all whilst also conducting the successful Tewit Youth Band.

Contest and artistic success

He then led them to the 2011 First Section North of England Area title, a feat he repeated in 2013, whilst he also enhanced their reputation as an innovative and entertaining concert provider.

The band’s profile was further boosted by his leadership in making a lasting musical connection with Harrogate's twin town, Luchon as well as performing at the Harrogate International Festival.

The intelligence he brought to interpreting music enhanced our contest results considerably. He leaves us as Musical Director but remains a firm friend of the bandChairman, Catherine Morland

Firm friend

Chairman, Catherine Morland added: “Craig understood our audiences; connected with them and also challenged them.

The intelligence he brought to interpreting music enhanced our contest results considerably. He leaves us as Musical Director but remains a firm friend of the band."

Assistant MD Craig Buchan will lead rehearsals until a replacement MD is appointed.
