Report & Results: 2014 Kippax Entertainment Contest

Strata Brass takes first title under new MD Derek Renshaw.

Strata Brass

Strata Brass has won the popular Kippax Entertainment Contest title following an enjoyable event at Kippax Band Cub in Leeds on the weekend.

Under the baton of newly appointed MD Derek Renshaw, they beat off the challenge of Lancashire rivals Uppermill, conducted by Alan Widdop, and North of England contenders York Railway Institute, led by Chris Hirst, to take the £250 first prize.

Best soloist

The band’s bass trombonist Ian Woffinden took the ‘Best Soloist’ award in a programme set that certainly tickled the fancy of adjudicator Stan Lippeatt.

Strata started with ‘Olympic Fanfare & Theme’, before moving through ‘Pavanne’ from ‘Music from an Elizabethan Court’, the bass trombone feature, ‘I Wanna Be Like You’, the cornet trio ‘Stardust’, ‘Gypsy Dream’ and ‘Cossack Wedding Dance’ from ‘Call of the Cossacks’, ‘My Sister Kate’ and ‘I'll Walk with God’.

Moving forward

Band Secretary Paul Wilkinson told 4BR: “The band has had a few setbacks recently but the new signings and fresh approach from Derek has got the band moving forward again.”
