BBC Radio 2 has announced details of this year’s ‘Young Folk Award’ and ‘Young Brass Award’ — the network’s annual initiatives that provide a platform for young performers to showcase their musical talents.
Important
Bob Shennan, Director, BBC Music said: “The Young Folk Award and Young Brass Award are an important part of our annual musical calendar and they demonstrate the diverse range of music we support on the network.
BBC Music is committed to nurturing this new talent as they take their first steps into the world of music and it’s an honour to provide them with a tremendous opportunity for wider recognition on a national platform.”
Launch
The ‘Young Folk Award’ is Radio 2’s annual search for the UK’s most talented young performers (soloists, duos and groups) of folk, roots or acoustic music from any culture, whilst the ‘Young Brass Award’ was recently launched on the Radio 2 Breakfast show by presenter Sara Cox.
The Award is a nationwide search open to all young brass musicians aged 16-21, providing them with the opportunity to demonstrate their musical expertise on a national stage.
Performances
The semi-finalists will record with Brighouse & Rastrick, whilst the finalists will perform alongside Grimethorpe Colliery under the direction of Frank Renton in the final in March 2015, presented by Frank and Ken Bruce.
The 2014 winner Matilda Lloyd (above) recently appeared at the BBC Proms, as well as joining Sara Cox for the Award launch, performing live on air.
