Historic medals from the Crystal Palace National and Belle Vue Championships that were presented to one of the greatest conductors in brass band history have been sold at auction.
Foden's
The memorabilia once belonged to legendary Foden’s Motor Works conductor Fred Mortimer and his son Rex, and went under the hammer at Adam Partridge Auctions in Liverpool during the week — eventually being sold for £600 to a private dealer.
They included the Iles Medal presented to Fred Mortimer in 1948, as well as a 15ct gold medal for winning the Belle Vue September Contest of 1926, and a 9 carat gold medal for winning the 1932 National Championship at Crystal Palace.
Also included was as a silver medal for coming runner-up at the 1907 July Spring Belle Vue Festival

Double hat trick
The medals and medallions presented to Rex Mortimer included his gold medal for the 1932 National victory and the Iles Medal of 1962, as well as bronze Crystal Palace medals in recognition of the victories of 1933, 1934, 1936, 1937 and 1938, and a commemorative Elizabeth II Coronation medal.
The auction house would not release details of either the seller or purchaser, but did tell 4BR that the five lots ‘were sold quickly’.
